Stop Blocking the Holy Spirit

Your body is the antenna. Your diet, your sleep, your habits, and your sins are the interference. In this season, spiritual static is a luxury you cannot afford.

The Body Is The Antenna

The Holy Spirit is always broadcasting. Guidance. Correction. Courage. Specific wisdom for the decision you are trying to make. The question is almost never "is God saying something?" The question is "is the antenna clean enough to receive?"

Most of the time, it is not. And the reason it is not has less to do with theology than with lifestyle.

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Paul was not being poetic. He was describing the literal architecture. If the temple is polluted, the presence is obstructed. You can still be saved, still believe, still pray, and be pulling in such a degraded signal that you mistake it for silence.

In a normal season that is a slow leak. In this season it is a crisis. There is too much at stake, too many decisions arriving too fast, too much real spiritual warfare happening to afford a body that cannot hear.

Naming The Itis

Black vernacular has had a name for this for a long time: "the itis." You eat a heavy meal and thirty minutes later you are flat on the couch, foggy, half-asleep, incapable of a clear thought. It feels comfortable because the body is in a pleasant shutdown. It is also, in that moment, spiritually offline.

The itis is the most common blocker I know. It is legal. It is culturally celebrated. It is often social. And it takes a person who was walking in discernment at 5 pm and drops them into a low-resolution version of themselves by 7 pm. Whatever prompting the Spirit was going to drop in that two-hour window gets absorbed into the couch cushions.

Multiply that by a lifetime of heavy meals and you understand why most of us, most of the time, are operating in the spiritual equivalent of dial-up.

What Blocks The Signal

It is not just food. The common blockers, ranked roughly by how sneaky they are:

  • Heavy, processed, or excessive eating. Not specifically "bad" foods. Just the volume and density that tips the body from nourished into sedated. The body spends the next three hours in digestion mode and spiritual reception drops to background static.
  • Alcohol and most recreational substances. The obvious ones. You do not think as clearly, you do not hear as clearly, and the after-effect extends into the next morning's prayer time.
  • Sleep debt. The Spirit speaks loudest to rested people. The person who slept five hours is carrying a handicap they do not even feel anymore because they have normalized the fog.
  • Constant screen noise. Endless scroll, endless podcast, endless background audio. The Spirit speaks in a still small voice. If there is never any stillness and never any smallness, the voice has nowhere to land.
  • Unconfessed sin. Unforgiveness, gossip, lust, resentment, ongoing dishonesty in any close relationship. These are not "metaphorical" blocks. Scripture is explicit: sin separates. The Holy Spirit does not fully indwell a life actively practicing rebellion.
  • Hurry. Pace itself is a blocker. Even with clean food, clean sleep, and clean habits, a constantly hurried day does not create the receptive window the Spirit uses to speak in specifics.

Any one of these is manageable. The problem is that the average person has four or five of them stacked most days. The temple is crowded.

What Unblocks

The corresponding practices. None of them are clever. All of them require showing up:

  • Eat lighter, especially during the day. Whatever your normal lunch is, try eating two-thirds of it and see how the afternoon feels spiritually. The evidence compounds fast.
  • Fast sometimes. Even a partial fast (skipping one meal) clears the channel noticeably for the hours that follow. Longer fasts (24-72 hours) open capacity most people have never experienced.
  • Sleep enough. Non-negotiable. Seven to eight hours, on a consistent schedule, in a dark room. This is a spiritual discipline, not just a health one.
  • Build daily stillness. Not meditation in the Eastern sense. Christian contemplative practice: silence with an open posture, listening. Even ten minutes a day produces a different year.
  • Confess regularly. Not performatively. Specifically. To God and, where appropriate, to another person. The Holy Spirit fills cleared space.
  • Move the body. A daily walk, a workout, a few minutes of stretching. The body that does not move becomes dull in every dimension, including the spiritual one.
  • Drink water. Boring. Still works.
  • Protect pace. Build one unhurried hour into every day where nothing is on the schedule and you are available to whatever the Spirit wants to say.

The combined effect of even half of these, practiced for 30 days, is the difference between a sputtering spiritual reception and a clear one.

Why This Matters Right Now

The Great Transition is accelerating. The people who will come through it well are the people whose decisions are being informed by the Holy Spirit in real time, not the people who get around to asking God for input on Sundays. The 100x choices God wants to illuminate are dropping daily. You either receive them or you miss them. Receiving them is a function of the instrument, not the speaker.

This connects to the practice rung I wrote about in The Grounding Questions. Underneath the blockers layer is the nourishment layer. Underneath the "what is stopping me from playing my highest game" question is the "am I clear enough to even hear the answer" question. If the answer to the second question is no, solving the first question becomes impossible.

For anyone trying to build something serious in this season, the body is not secondary. The body is the operating system the Spirit runs on. The cleaner you keep it, the more signal you receive, the better decisions you make, the more favor compounds, the faster the mission advances.

There is no part of this that is optional anymore.

The Reframe

Most people think of diet and lifestyle as a vanity issue or a longevity issue. Look good at the beach. Live to 95. Those are real. They are not why I am writing this.

I am writing this because your ability to hear God clearly in 2026 is directly proportional to how you are treating the temple. The next ten years of your life depend on decisions you have not made yet, some of which will arrive in 18-month windows that are only visible to people receiving the specific guidance that comes in clean states.

You do not want to miss the 100x choice because you got the itis at dinner.

Stop eating, drinking, scrolling, and sleeping like someone who does not need to hear from God. You need to hear from God more than ever. Clean the temple.
