What The Word Actually Means
The word authentic gets thrown around a lot. Mostly it means "I like the vibe." That definition is too soft to be useful.
Go to the root. Authentic comes from the Greek authentikos: genuine, original, authorized. Underneath sits authentes, the one acting on their own authority. The source, not the relay.
That definition is harder to qualify for. It is also the one that matters.
Authenticity And Signal Are The Same Family
Signal comes from the Latin signum: a sign, a mark, a token of what something is. The two words traveled through different languages into English, so they are not etymological siblings. They orbit the same conceptual core: what points to what is real.
When you say someone is high-signal, you mean their words and presence carry information that holds up to scrutiny. When you say someone is authentic, you mean the source of those words and that presence is them, and not a script someone else wrote.
High signal without originality is just a clean repeater. Originality without signal is noise. Real authenticity is both: a person who is the source AND whose source produces something worth paying attention to.
The Test: Are You Captured?
The diagnostic is simple. Whose script are you running?
If your opinions arrive pre-formed from an algorithm, an industry, a peer group, a party, an employer, or a feed, you are being handled. Your output is downstream of whoever set the inputs. You are a node passing through someone else's signal with a thin glaze of personality on top.
If your opinions had to be paid for in lived experience, lonely thinking, rejected drafts, friends lost over hard conversations, and the slow accumulation of taste built from real reps, you are the source. You earned the right to be called original. You earned the right to be called authentic.
Most people in public are captured. Captured by their audience, their algorithm, their funding, their tribe. Their content is a function of incentives that are not theirs. The people watching can feel it, even when they cannot name it.
Imago Dei Creator
The deeper claim under the etymology: human beings are made in the image of a Creator. Originality is the design spec, not a personality trait. The whole point of being a person is to be a particular one, generating outputs that no one else could generate from no one else's interior. When you let yourself be handled, you abandon the spec. You become a worse version of an algorithm that was already going to do the algorithmic part better than you. The thing only you could do is the thing that gets crowded out first when you outsource your inputs.
The recovery is hard but not complicated. Consume less of what the feed serves you. Sit with your own thoughts long enough to find out which of them are actually yours. Pay the price in slowness and isolation that originality has always cost. There is no shortcut.

Here is the practical payoff. Originals attract. People can feel the difference between someone who is sourcing from themselves and someone who is reciting. They cannot always articulate it. They gravitate anyway.
In an economy flooded with synthetic everything, the rarest thing in circulation is a person who actually means what they say and arrived at it on their own. That person becomes a magnet. The crowd that gathers is the one that wanted out of the script the whole time and was waiting for somebody to prove that out was possible.
