Finding a Church Home

If you are moving to Austin or already here and looking for a church home, here are the ones I can personally vouch for. Different vibes, different denominations, all genuine communities.

Tarrytown Christian Church

Website · Google Maps

Non-denominational. "Simple church, real community." Located at 2614 Exposition Blvd in the Tarrytown neighborhood. Small, reverent, beautiful community. It has a lot of the ritual and reverence you would find in a Catholic church but without the denominational baggage. The worship leader is excellent. The pastor is solid. The size is intimate enough that you actually know people. Sunday services at 10:00 AM. If you want a church that feels like a family, this is it.

Church of Whitestone

Website · Google Maps

Led by Tauren Wells, Grammy-nominated gospel and worship artist, and his wife Lorna. Launched in January 2024 and welcomed 3,500 people on opening weekend. The name comes from Revelation 2:17: "To the one who overcomes, He will give a white stone with a name engraved on it that only they know." Located in the Austin/Georgetown area, north of the city. The music is incredible (as you would expect from Tauren). Growing fast. If you want a church where the worship hits you in your chest, this is the one.

St. Theresa Catholic Church

Website · Google Maps

Catholic. One of Austin's oldest parishes, founded in 1921. Located at 4311 Small Dr. The present church was built in 1929 in a mission style with Gothic interior details. Strong family orientation, and the school is a 2023 Blue Ribbon School. I have friends who are Catholic and really love this community. If you are coming from a Catholic background and want to stay in tradition, this is the recommendation I hear most from people I trust.

Red Rocks Church Austin

Website · Google Maps

Non-denominational. "Imperfect people pursuing a perfect God." Located at 7625 N Interstate 35. Part of a multi-campus church founded in 2005. Campus Pastor is Doug Wekenman. Younger congregation, lots of people in their twenties and early thirties. Multiple service times: Saturdays at 4pm and 6pm, Sundays at 8am, 9:45am, 11:30am, and 1pm. Good energy, accessible, less formal. If you are newer to church or want a community where you will meet people your age, Red Rocks is a solid starting point.

Every one of these communities has genuine people who care about each other. The right one depends on what you are looking for: intimacy vs. energy, tradition vs. accessibility, small vs. large. Visit a couple and you will know.
