AI Is A Truth Serum

Agents amplify exactly what is already inside the operator. Clear thinkers get to one hundred times the output. Charlatans get exposed.

The most surprising property of working with AI agents at any serious depth is that the agent is honest. It runs whatever you give it. If you give it confused thinking, it produces confused results faster than you can review them. If you give it sharp thinking, it runs the sharp thinking out across many tasks at once, and the gap between you and the next operator opens by an order of magnitude in a quarter.

There is no middle ground. The agent magnifies what is in the operator.

What This Reveals

Most office work has been propped up for decades by the second-order skills: charisma, posturing, knowing whom to talk to, taking credit for work nearby. These are real skills. They were the skills.

They are now downstream of the only first-order skill that matters when an agent is in the loop, which is whether you can think a problem through clearly enough to instruct the agent to solve it. A scatterbrained operator gets a scatterbrained pipeline. The agent does not paper over the confusion with politics. It runs.

The people who push back hardest on AI are usually the people the agent would expose. The pushback is the immune response of someone who has correctly intuited that the curtain is about to come down on a charade they have been running for a long time.

The Asymmetry

A clear thinker with an agent runs at a hundred times the output of a clear thinker without one. The clearer the thinker, the wider the gap. Every well-formed thought becomes a workflow that runs at machine speed. Every well-formed judgment becomes a reusable skill. Every well-formed prompt becomes a small army.

A confused thinker with an agent runs at one to two times the output of a confused thinker without one, with the added downside that the output is now error-prone in less recoverable ways, because the agent did the work fast and at scale before anyone caught the mistake.

What To Do With This

Stop waiting for the agent to fill in the parts of your thinking you have not yet done. The only operation it runs is magnification.

The work to do now is the work to be clear: write down what you actually believe, what you are actually trying to build, what the actual constraint is. See externalize your brain for the discipline. The clearer the operator, the larger the multiplier.

Posturing was the old game. The agent ignores posturing.

The agent runs whatever you give it. The clarity of what you give it is now the whole game.
