Activate The Activators

The best people to empower are the ones who will pass it on. Empower the activators; the movement grows through them.

The Heuristic

When your time and capital are limited, the best people to spend them on are the people who, once activated, will pass it on. They do not hoard the unlock. Once they have what they needed, they turn around and activate the next person. And the next. And the next. The movement grows through them.

Call them activators. The goal is to activate the activators.

The Mechanism

Activators operate on enlightened self-interest, not charity. They understand that a community of people who share field notes back and forth is worth more than any single person's hoard. If they help ten people, and each of those ten eventually sees something in the field that feeds back into what the activator is doing, the activator ends up further along than they would have by keeping everything to themselves.

A person who activates other activators is quietly building the network that keeps them sharp for decades. That is the long-term bet they are making, whether they name it or not.

How To Spot One

Signals that someone is an activator-in-waiting:

  • They ask good questions about what you are doing, out of genuine curiosity about how the ideas transfer.
  • They have a pattern in their history of introducing people to each other, without gatekeeping their network.
  • When they learn a useful thing, they want to teach it the same week. Somebody, somewhere, is already the better for the idea they picked up.
  • They talk about the people they learned from by name, with gratitude, years later.
  • They hold frames lightly. If the frame gets better, they upgrade and carry the new frame forward.

People who stockpile introductions, credit, or frameworks are the opposite. Their energy flows in. Little flows back out. Pouring resources into that type is charity with a closed end.

Why This Is The Only Way Movements Scale

A movement cannot scale through the originator alone. The math is simple. One person can activate maybe a few hundred people in their life if they work at it. A network of activators can reach orders of magnitude more, because each activator becomes a node that produces new activators.

The compounding only works if the people you prioritize activating are the ones who pass it on. Otherwise you are running a single-player game with extra steps. See co-teaching is the new self-teaching for the philosophy at the individual level, and the Humanity-First Flywheel for the ecosystem mechanic.

The Practical Implication

When you have limited activation bandwidth (workshops you can run, people you can mentor, capital you can deploy), use the activator filter. Rank candidates by how likely they are to pay it forward. Spend the marginal hour on the one who is going to go on and activate the next five.

The unit of movement growth is the activator, not the individual. Spend your scarce empowerment on the people who will turn around and empower the next ones.
