A line of stepping stones crosses still, black night water; only the few stones nearest a tiny mid-crossing figure are lit warm gold by a soft shaft of light falling from a clouded, starlit navy sky, their reflections rippling in the water, while the stones farther ahead fade to dark silhouettes not yet lit.

Psalm 37:23. Only the next few stones are lit. That has always been enough.
